airplane travel.

I will be using a cardboard bike box for my trip to Europe.Should i take the rear derailleur off or leave it on and pad it well?

It's safer to take it off and only takes a small amount of time to reinstall it.

I leave them on. Shift it to the lowest gear (inboard) gear position, and pad the chainstay out beyond the upper body, so any impac or pressure is taken by the chainstay and not transferred to the hanger via the derailleur. I use a home made chainstay/reat triangle spacer, which extends out beyond the right dropout and has a small block of wood jammed onto it and tied to the stay with a cable tie.

Even if you opt to remove the RD, be sure to use a rear triangle spacer to keep keep the rear end from getting crushed.
