2015 Allez Sport Cassette compatibility

Does anyone know what the compatibility is for the Axis Classic Wheelset hubs on the 2015 Allez Sport?

Im thinking of going to 105 5800 in the near future and didnt know what it could handle.

Also considering 5700, but its only around $50 cheaper and I get 1 less speed so I doubt ill go that route.

You can determine if your current wheels will accept an 11 speed cassette by observing whether there is a spacer mounted behind your current cassette. It should be about 2mm thick. You may have to remove the cassette to see if there is a spacer. If there is no spacer, your wheel will not accept an 11 speed cassette. If you can only upgrade to 10 speed I would suggest that you consider Tiagra, all you would need are shifters, cassette, and chain

For what it's worth, my 2015 Allez with Axis Classic wheels were not 11 speed'able. My bike was an Elite with 10 speed Tiagra and when I removed the cassette there was no spacer and hence no 11 speed upgrade option. I'd stronly suspect the Axis Classic wheelset was the same between both our 2015 Allez'.

Ive called Specialized on 3 separate occasions and gotten 3 different answers on freehub compatibility.

I called in the first time and they told me just swap freehub bodies out with S142100004.

I called a second time a few days later and they told me S142100005 is the right hub. I only see this on bikes with Disc brakes, not sure if it matters.

Called in today and they said that nothing is compatible and I need a wheelset.

This is aggravating.

Well Specialized doesn't make anything themselves. Never have and never will. It is their business model to have someone else make it and stamp Specialized on it.

So if you can find out who makes the hubs you may be able to get some info straight from the manufacturer. Then again if it is a Formula or Origin 8 you may never get the level of tech data you want.

Im starting to not like Specialized

SPECIALIZED | 2015 Axis Classic Wheelset freehub compi...

Will definitely be checking the hubs out.

Just to double check, a 9 speed cassette is the same size as a 10 correct? The cog spacing is just smaller?

You can get Vuelta Corsa Lite wheelset from Nashbar for under 200 bucks when they run a sale, very light, very straight, and they are 11-sp compatible.

Not sure why you don't like them? Almost every bike sold with a 10 speed drive train will have hubs that work with 10 speed cassettes only. When Specialized sell a low end bike, they're not expecting their customers to be upgrading the entire drivetrain.

Dont get me wrong, I love my bike, I just want a straight answer from somebody regarding the hub. I dont even think I want to bother with swapping hub bodies anymore, I may just stick with going to the new Tiagra when it actually gets launched.

As for the stock wheelset, I was under the impression that 9 and 10 speed were roughly the same size, the ten speed just needs a spacer because its narrower than the 9 speed. Also, Specialized has this "same" wheelset on the next bike up with a 10 speed group.

I have them bookmarked for if I decide to go that route along with a few other wheelsets, I dont know how the 20/24 would handle my 170 lb frame though. Id like to avoid buying wheels at this point, but I am considering it.

Yes, 8, 9 and 10 speed hubs have the same size freehub.

The more I think about it, the better of an option this is.

Id be saving around a pound or rotating mass with those wheels. I should be good with the spoke count right? its 20/24 and im 170lb.

Then I can go 105 over the winter possibly.

Specialized stock wheels are HEAVY. New wheels will make a bigger difference than a new groupset.

YES! And they have 25% off single item today only through 10 PM! Use code 39457 at checkout. They would be only $195 plus whatever oversize charges are needed (regular shipping itself is free).

I'm right around 200 and carry an extra 15+ pounds on the back of the bike with a rack, trunk bag, clothes, U lock, etc.

Any issues with the freehub or bearings? Is your cassette chewing into the freehub?

No bearing issues that I could tell. I removed the cassette for cleaning after the wheelset had been used about 5K miles, and I saw some tiny notches in the hub splines. But it really wasn't bad at all.

Dang you missed the sale, though. Can you wait until the next one? They email me pretty much every day with sales. The 25% off single item sale runs at least once a month, if not more.

Im in no rush. I purposely waited this time so it wasnt just an impulse buy. I seriously wanted to consider my options before pulling the trigger. I really want the Boyds, but for how much I ride, theres not really a point in spending the money.
