From the Description for the 4601:
  • Alloy body and outer link lowers weight without compromising strength and durability.
  • Direct mount.
  • Wide links increase rigidity and service life.
  • 2 fluorine-coated link pin bushings reduce friction.

The 4600 can also handle a wider range drive train - 39 tooth difference vs. 34 for the 4601 (see Specs).

Other than that they are the exact same? I'm thinking the 4601 is an "updated" 4600, so it should have different features, shouldn't it?

Then what's a 4603 which came out before a 4601?

03 usually refers to a triple specific part while 01 is simply an updated model. (The specs may or may not be the same as the 00 model but it will generally work as a drop in replacement.) the only 4603 parts are the crankset, front derailleur, and shifters. while the GS cage derailleur is generally used on triples it isn't a triple specific part (just a part with enough capacity for triples)

The 03 USUALLY means a triple crank specific part. On a rear derailleur it only means that it has a longer arm throw so that it can handle a wider high/low ratio.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm having trouble determining whether the shop put in the 4600 or 4601. I have a 2014 Specialized Secteur Elite Disc. Can anyone tell after zooming in on the icon of the bike on the page below if it's a tiagra 4600 or 4601?

The photos in those first MEC links don't show it very well, but I've been under the impression that GS is medium cage and SS is standard road short cage.

Both MEC photos seem to be SS length cages, they are probably using sample photos from Shimano.

I wouldn't worry about the specific model # so much. It's a Tiagra 4600 series GS cage shown in that photo.

Shimano just refers to them as RD-4600-SS and RD-4600-GS as noted:

If you really must know your specific model # then you will need to get out the flashlight and start looking around the back and underside of the derailleur. It's generally stamped on there somewhere.
