I have been thinking about upgrading from 10 to 11 speed road.
Is it necessary to also change the chainrings to adjust for the difference in chain width?

thanks.

Test.. does the 11 speed chain lay easily over the 10 speed chain ring teeth ? it's better than a 3rd party Opinion.

there will be no more 'speed' (Velocity) without a more fit Motor Of course..

The only difference between 10 and 11 speed chains is the outer plating diameter. The inside dimensions are the same. The distance is so small that in many anecdotally evidenced situations, there's many cyclists that run an 11 speed crankset using a 10 speed chain.

I broke my original 10 speed chain some time ago during an outing and after 3000Km mainly in winter time (road salt, humidity, water, more road salt). Went to LBS for a new chain and they gave me an 11sp one. i was quite vary about installing it but did and worked flawlessly.

I don't think why you will need to change chainrings (unless you want to re-regear or change cranks).

thanks everyone. so i guess my takeaway is that the chainring that i have for my 10 speed would work just fine if i changed to 11 speed. that would save a chunk of change.

It appears from previous posts that you've asked a lot of pretty basic questions, and now you've jumped to changing from 10 to 11 speeds. I'm probably preaching to the atheists, but if you want to save a bigger chunk of change consider why you want to do so rather than if you can. The most likely change is that you will add a higher ratio gear at the top end, which as already mentioned will not result in an increase in speed. You will be able to inefficiently pedal downhill more comfortably, though.
