Groupset upgrade

There is a fair bit around on this, but I had a specific question.
I'm running a Scott CR1 with 9 speed Sora gear on it. I'm thinking of upgrading to ultegra 6800. I know the 11sp cassette won't fit on the 9sp freehub.
People talk about the dimension of the freehub being bigger on the ultegra. Is this the bolt which connects into the hub itself? Will I need to change the whole rear wheel or would I be able to buy a ultegra compatible hub and new spokes and do it that way?
As an aside, how hard is it to put the new wheel together?

An 11 speed free hub is LONGER.
I suggest you look here and download the PDF's for the 2 hubs in question. The "guts" are very different.

You shouldn't need new spokes, since the flange diameters and CTF's are pretty similar.

You can download the dealers manual with those spec's here-

The freehub body for 8/9/10 cassettes is 35 mm wide and for 11 speed it is about 37mm. I just altered a 10 speed body by grinding the slots that stop the cassette from going on far enough, and it worked out great. I just don't know if you have access to a small grinder.

Does not that place the chain dangerously close to the spokes when on the inner cog?

When the bike is shifted into the largest cog, with an aligned drop out, the derailleur arm still misses from catching the spokes by 4-5 mm, so as long as the limit screw is stopping the derailleur properly, it is fine.

Your concern is legit. Before modifying a hub, I would recommend putting the 10 speed bike in 1st gear, and check for derailleur/ spoke clearance and realize with the modification, the derailleur will be 2mm closer to the spokes.

Details.... The free hub body must be ground evenly, or you will end up with a wobbly cassette, and will affect shifting quality/ ability to have a quiet drive train.

this Upgrade cult has a lot of scientology like adherents, all thinking it's gotta be faster because it goes to 11.

Still have to put the work out , in fact you have to put out more work , because it will cost a lot more money
than just servicing what you have ..

so get in all those Overtime hours at work to pay the costs
