Solution for missing Symmetric levers

i have been given a ancient Schwinn road bike that was somewhat converted to the single speed fixed gear ( hacked to death )
it is missing front and real derailleur , but the main missing piece is the shifter levers that seem to screw into the top of down tube , i have looked online to see them going for 40 to 100 $ no effin way , im sure i can mount cable stops and just convert it some how , with more hacking involved , has anyone also done this any suggs please .....

oooo, i guess i can just use normal ones and use the square piece to brace them i guess i dunno maybe one of those metal fasteners you screw to tighten

http://bikecatalogs.org/SCHWINN/MODELS/Le%20Tour.html i think its the 1986 le tour same shifters

Suntour Symmetric shifters seemed pretty plentiful in the $40 range last time I glanced at eBay, which doesn't seem too unreasonable compared to other specific shifter types. You'll just have to ignore the auctions with ridiculous asking prices. If you don't see a reasonably priced pair at the moment you search, just be patient; it might take a number of days, but they'll come along.

Another possibility: You could potentially score a pair from another forum member via the ISO/Trade thread in the Classic & Vintage forum.
