Shimano XT RD on road bike, do I need medium or long cage?

I want to put a SRAM 12-36 cassette on my road bike with 10 speed Shimano 105 shifters and 50/34 double. I understand I need a 9 speed XT RD to accomplish this, do I need the medium or long cage?

Thanks

You will need a long cage der to handle the chain wrap. Carefully check the specs on the dérailleurs that you are considering to make sure that they can handle the 36t cog, not all will.

You don't have much of a choice. By the time 36T was introduced XT was already at 10-speed. Deore was still at 9-speed, the Deore RD-M592 can handle 36T but it's only available in long.

You can experiment with RDs made for 34T but you'll need a total capacity of at least 40 teeth.

Judging by what's on the Shimano site the M592 is not long for this world (It's Deore 9x, and Deore 10x has been out for a while now) and the M4000 will be the next best thing.

Ok long cage it is then. Any special considerations in sizing the chain with the bigger cassette? Big/big method+2(including Missing link) good to go here?
