Vittoria hyper tires weigh a lot more than advertised?
2 Attachment(s)
So I have had Vittoria randonneur hyper before and bought some new ones under the voyager hyper label. Difference is that these are now clinchers instead of folding. But i looked on Vittorias homepage, and it states 395 gram, seems quite ok for a 35mm tire.
This turned out to be a huge exaggeration, i know the stated weight might differ some times, but this it ridiculous. Stated 395 grams for clincher: Voyager Hyper - Vittoria.com Reality(weighed on a kitchen scale as well with same result): http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=475768 Reference weight on the same scale, san marco regal: http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=475770 This is almost 50% more than stated!!!?? |
How much does 2 of them weigh?
Your scale is best used when weighing items that are about 1/2 of the max range. At lower weights, you may be getting some "stiction". |

First with 2 tires, second with 3 tires. So no the scale is perfect. As I wrote in the first post, i tried this on a kitchen scale with same result. |
You mentioned these are non-folding so I'm assuming these are steel bead rather than the lighter Kevlar. Does this size come in both Kevlar and steel? If so they may be listing the Kevlar weight but even so this wouldn't account for the extra heft. An email to Vittoria might get some answers.

Considering they are advertised as "ultra light", I think Vittoria owes you an explanation.
Maybe return them and get a different tire. |
Tire and rim weights are well known to vary by at least 10% and not be considered "wrong". Molds and dies wear and material density varies. But 570 VS 395 is a lot of difference. I suspect that the problem lies with the spec list being wrong. This also happens all the time. The people responsible for the document writing don't get/ask for the right data from the manufacturer side (which is also often a bit different then what the design side intended too. ) Andy.

The Hyper is a "folding" tire. They also make a wire bead that they call the "rigid" version of the Voyager without the Hyper designation that weighs 575g. Where did you get the tires? Perhaps they are counterfeit. In looking around at various retailers, I only find them in Black.

They are bought at planetX bikes, so I doubt they are counterfeit.

You got steel bead and wonder why they weigh more than the folding Kevlar bead tires?
convert to sew-ups if weight really matters , then keep spare wheels in the pits for when you puncture . |

Well, this is getting interesting. As "dsaul" noted the wire bead, non-hyper version is the same weight and color as your tires so possibly a labeling error. I know Planet X is very reputable but they do tend to buy some of their products in batches and sell at very low prices until their stock is gone. Possibly Vittoria realized they made the labeling mistake and gave PX a special deal. Still no excuse for selling mis-represented tires so you may also want to let PX know about it.

You shouldn't have to pay the shipping if it is their error.

Both versions have the hyper label. He clearly bought the wired version. It's a totally different tire than the folding version. Vittoria Voyager Hyper Wired Tyre | Planet X |

No, only the folding one i supposed to be labeled as "Hyper".
You should be able to tell the difference by trying to fold/bend the tire bead. |

So, basically, you've inadvertently wandered into uncharted territory. |

So you got a great internet deal on some black/ gray/ closeout/ aftermarket tires. Worked out well for you?
|
i think i would weigh a pint, or litre, of water with that scale, just to make sure of it's accuracy. then if all is ok, chalk it up to a learning experience and then next time pay an arm and a leg for them at the LBS and take your scale with you.
