Weird Deore XT shifter problem (inserting cable)

I have put hundreds of cables in shifters and have never run into this. When I attempt to put the cable into the shifter to seat the barrel in the shifter body, there is a flat piece of metal that looks like spring steel in the way. This is a Deore SL M780 front derailleur shifter. The tolerances are so small that I can not pull the barrel by the piece of metal. I can clearly see where the barrel should seat, but can not pull the cable to put it in place. Any suggestions? I took a picture which shows the piece of steel.

Release tension by using the black 'lower gear' lever. (as opposed to the grey lever, on the XT, I think) This should move the part out of the way.

You may have inserted the cable with the shifter in high gear and thus passed the cable behind the offending part, in which case you'll have to get it out before shifting to lowest setting and reinserting it.
