Very confused, Vintage Campagnolo Record Triple BB spindle width....
Ok, here's the setup; I have a 73 Paramount that came with the standard Campy Strada marked double crankset (I think they are called Nuovo Record). I'm trying to install a newly acquired, similar vintage Campy Strada marked triple (making the bike better for an old guy who wants to tour). The BB spindle measures 113mm tip to tip with my analog calipers. The BB she'll is 68mm wide, edge to edge. When I mounted the right side crankset, it pressed against the frame and will not turn. Bummed.
I read somewhere on this forum that Campy used the sane part number for the BB spindle for both double and triple cranks.
From the new reading I can find, and from looking at auctions of complete triples (with the correct BB included), it appears that I need a 120mm spindle. They are marked 68 SS 120.
Here's where the confusion starts.
Several people have stated in their ads that the 68 SS 120 is actually 112mm wide, while another says theirs is 117mm wide.....doesn't the "120" stamp mean it's 120mm wide? The "68" must refer to the BB she'll width. Are folks just not able to measure right or am I missing something?
I have my first century ride in 20 years coming up on the 11th of October and I'd really like to get this figured out in time

I am pretty sure campy spindles from that period are asymmetrical, with the drive side longer Any chance you put the spindle on reversed.
Velobase lists the nuovo record triple as 117mm VeloBase.com - Component: Campagnolo 744/1, Nuovo Record Triple
based on this it would seem you need a 68-SS-120 X 3 spindle

Thankyou @squirtdad for the kind help. I thought I had done some pretty good research but ended up confused. You've verified something I had seen on a few other sites, I was just conflicted about what I was seeing. The triple spindles I was finding pictures of were only stamped 68 ss 120, or so I thought, very likely I didn't know what I was looking at. Soooo, I also need to replace the cups and bearings. Might be easier to just order a brand new BB from Phil Wood and be done with it
Oh, also, I hadn't removed the BB, I just pulled the cranks and mounted the triple. When I get back home I'll measure the left and right sections and see if there is a difference. Thanks again for the tip !

Hi @Bandera,
Clearly I have read wrong. Thankfully there are people wiser than me on this forum who are willing to help.

Finding the correct Campag BB will be time consuming and expensive, although mine spins on for decades of use.
"Back when" we fitted the appropriate Phil BB for touring riders as a matter of course, today Velo Orange might well have a good choice also.

Also part of the issue is dealing with the campy taper. if you can't find the right bb/spindle set up from campy, then it seems the options are phil wood (and I am not 100% sure even he has the correct taper...didn't research that too much) or just going with a new(er) matching crankset and bottom bracket.

Campagnolo bottom brackets of that era are a Hot Mess. If your newly-acquired Campy triple crank is of the same vintage as the frame, you'll want an "old style" 68SS 120 X3 spindle. If it's a post-CPSC model, you'll want the new style 68SS 120 X3 (+1, 1.5) version.
