Will a Shimano 9 speed Deore shifter work with a 9 speed Tiagra RD?

Hi all,

Will a Shimano 9 speed Deore shifter work with a Shimano 9 speed Tiagra RD?

I have a bike that I am building up for a friend, it is an older mixte frame that was 2 x 5 speed. But I am going to rebuild it for her as a 1 x 9. I haven't cold set the rear yet, but I already have a set of wheels build on Tiagra road hubs. She is going to have cruiser style or townie bars on it, so I was thinking of setting up a right trigger shifter to control the RD, but I am unsure of compatibility.

Thanks in advance,
