37k miles is more than I would expect to get out of a rim with rim brakes. I always manage to do something else to ruin them before they wear out, but a couple have been close after more like 10-15k miles. |
I built my new front wheel with an Alex Adventurer rim. Its walls are 3.5mm thick, 1mm thicker than the Sun CR18's, and that much heavier (I don't mind the weight.)
It comes with a wear indicator, a strip of metal in the brake track, that one is supposed to monitor for when to replace the rim. It's .3 mm thick. My Sun CR18 lasted from 2.5mm to 1. I'm not going to discard this rim when it's 3.2 mm thick (unless it has failed for some other reason). |
Glad you made a decision , at last.
