11-speed MTB and road freehub compatibility

Are the 11-speed Shimano freehubs found on MTB and road hubs the same? For example, can I mount a 105 11-32 cassette onto a MTB with an 11-speed XTR derailleur and wheelset?

The spline pattern is identical between shimano road and mt bike freehub bodies.

Thanks, I was pretty sure that was the case, but needed to double check since all the bike companies seem to introduce a new standard at every opportunity.

If you're saying the road cassette you want to mount on the hub is 11 speed, it will depend. You can mount an 11 speed mtb cassette on a regular 8/9/10 speed freehub body (road or mountain hub, doesn't matter), so there are mountain bikes out there with 11 speed cassettes that use the older freehub body width that was made for 8/9/10. If this is your situation, you won't be able to mount an 11 speed road cassette on that hub because the freehub body isn't wide enough. If it's a hub that's got the newer "11 speed" freehub body width (approx. 1.85mm wider than the old standard), then it will work with either 11 speed road or mountain, would probably require a small spacer behind a mtb cassette.

What I want to do is mount a custom configured 105 road CS-5800 road cassette onto a MTB hub (XTR or 3rd party brand) for a gravel/cyclocross wheelset build, as I do not want to use the 11-40 XTR cassette. I just came across this description below from Shimano when looking at XTR hubs pricing. So did Shimano make the XTR 11-speed incompatible with the 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace 11-speed?

Shimano's XTR line consists of the most advanced components on the market, and the XTR M9000 32h 11SP QR Rear Hub is no exception.
Between its light weight, incredible engagement, and smooth roll, the XTR M9000 hub presents the full package. Thanks to the light weight axle and bearings, the hub weighs in at just 271 grams, making the M9000 is one of the lightest hubs on the market. Not only do polished bearings provide top notch performance with their almost frictionless roll, but they still live up to Shimano's well established name in the durability game.
Shimano's quick engagement freehub is constructed of titanium to reduce weight, increase strength, and help protect from corrosion. To further help with corrosion, the engineers used double contact bearing seals to keep debris, water, and grit out of your hub system...where it should be. So if you are looking for the best in performance and reliability, the Shimano XTR M9000 rear hub is your answer.
Includes XTR quick release skewer. Centerlock disc mount only. Not compatible with Shimano 11 speed road cassettes.

Not quite. What Shimano did was make their 11-speed MTB cassettes narrower than the 11-speed road cassettes. The 11-speed MTB cassettes will fit on an 8/9/10-speed road or MTB freehub body like the current XTR. The road 11-speed cassettes, being wider, require a specific wider freehub body. The road 11-speed freehub body will accept road or MTB cassettes in 8//9/10/11-speed form but require a spacer for anything but 11-speed road cassettes.
