spring loaded shimano bar end shifters ???
Hello,
In the process of converting to bar end shifters on my bike....I bought a set of shimano that are spring loaded (all of my others do not have this feature), will there work with older campy stuff, do they need to be modified?
Thanks , Ben

I have a Shimano made bar end shifter, it has a retro force return spring to balance the one in the derailleur..
I found it only practical for the FD.
the Sun Tour ones I have used for 30+ years, use a ratchet pawl scheme to hold the friction,
but release that when pulling the cable tighter..
can you be specific on which ones you are speaking of.. pictures help.
particularly of them dis assembled so as to show the Springs.

Here is a pic....all of my older ones are not spring loaded....if this will work curious as to why the spring action was added.

You already have them, there is little to lose but time by trying them.

The spring action is to counter the spring in the derailleur, so less effort is needed to shift to lower gears. Simplex pioneered this design in the 1970s with their highly-regarded "retrofriction" levers. I suspect Shimano licensed the design from Simplex. Now, with ubiquitous indexed shifting these are rarely seen anymore. They should work just fine with older Campagnolo derailleurs.

Ha! I knew you had the same ones I found at my co-op.
Yeah, I installed them and they felt bizarre at first because the lever returns but the gear stays shifted. As I have moved them between bikes, I've put them on the front too with SunTour Ratchet on rear. By now the return springs are broken in both from wear, lol
