standard cone wrench vs adjustable thin jaw

Anyone is using an adjustable thin jaw wrench (see image taken from Amazon) instead of (several) standard cone wrenches for hub maintenance? On the plus side, an adjustable wrench is guarantee that you always have the right size with you. On the minus size, it may be a PITA because it most likely limits the operating radius of the wrench use in combination...

You usually need 2, and two adjustables would crash into each other. Some cones have really small flats as well. None too good for the cones either. But if I had one, I'd use it.

Your 'minus' is the big issue. Plus often when working on your front and rear wheels you'll need 2 different sized wrenches on the same side of the wheel at the same time with limited space available. Then there's the inherent 'sloppiness' of an adjustable wrench not to mention the cost of a good one.

As mentioned you'll need at least 2 adj wrenches and trying to keep track of which is adjusted to different sized cone and locknut will drive you nuts at times plus some of the feel is lost in the heavy steel of an adjustable wrench making it harder to determine how much torque you're using. I'll take a set of proper cone wrenches anytime.

I would steer clear for a slightly different reason. Cone wrenches are very thin. Not a lot of material. Every once in a while they encounter a nut that requires enough force to cause real damage to the wrench. Keeping it cheap and no big deal to replace means that I will happily use it for that job that no other tool I own can get in to do.

Also, having a bunch of them helps a lot. I have often used three at the same time; to hold either cone or nut on the far side and two for the cone and nut I am adjusting. Now if I could just get third arm and hand to hold it with ...

Adjusting cones can be a pretty precise operation. Between the "sloppiness" and that "some of the feel is lost" with the adjustable wrench, I would personally find it to be a real nuisance trying to use it. I recommend getting cone wrenches. They aren't that expensive and will last forever.

I tell the kids at skule (I volunteer at a local high-school helping teach a course on bike repair) that the adjustable wrench should never be used to loosen anything that is tight nor tighten anything that is loose. An adjustable wrench is always the wrong length for the diameter of the fastener and has the ability to damage every fastener it touches.

Park cone wrenches are made of .075" stamped steel.

A couple of open end forged wrenches 13mm and 15mm polished off to .110" and .120" respectively will likely last a lot longer and give better service than an adjustable.....

I believe the thin adjustable wrenches are still quite a bit thicker than a cone wrench.

The problem with this tool is it's offset. To be able to use two of them within a confined space it needs to have the correct offset, you'll need 2 with a right offset and 2 with a left offset.

I have found 13 cones common on front 15 on rear and the Lock Nuts 17.

I have 2 wrenches stepped on each end * 13-15& 14-16 , the Lock nut can be a fixed, open end 17 or a crescent wrench .

on new hubs in New wheels it is common for them to be overtightened , at the factory ,

then I use 2 wrenches * on opposite ends of the Hub I doubt You will want to buy 2 of those thin adjustable ones.
