What kind of headset is this? I.S. or Campy Hiddenset?

Hey guys,

I'd like to replace this headset with something that has a short cover, however I've never seen this kind. I've dealt with a simple integrated headset with cartridge bearings. but...

This is a Campy record headset, and it has caged bearings. You slip a bearing race into the headtube, (it just rests inside, then place the bearings, dust cap, etc.

For the lower, it seems to have a permanent OR pressed (not sure) cup inside of the headtube. This is a 2003ish Cannondale CAAD7 Saeco. So inside of that cup goes the caged bearing, then of course the crown race with the fork.

Can anyone comfirm the type of headset this is? Is it just an integrated headset with caged bearings, or something else? Thanks! I need a little guidance beyond the Park Tool page on headsets.

I'm not sure if I have to replace it with another Campy headset, or if something else will be compatible. Also, no idea why that video in the youtube link uploaded at 240p... haha

Have you tried a Google search? ParK Tool are good, but they aren't the be all and end all for info; enter this search term - integrated headset campagnolo - there is plenty of info out there, or search on BF, someone has probably had the same issue before - https://www.bikeforums.net/bicycle-me...hiddenset.html.

in your case, if looking to replace, would look at replacing like with like.

Haha, of course I googled it! Though I didn't find that forum. I'll check it out, thanks.

Do you, or does anyone know if I can replace it with a different brand's headset?

Path of lowest resistance is to replace same with same, Why do you seek to make things more difficult ?

you can Measure all the engineering criteria to the nearest fraction of the MM

then seek out the engineering specs that make say cane creek aheadset Integrated headset frame prep different
than Campagnolo you have , and do the comparison your self ..

Realistically, this is a consumers forum not a manufacturers one ..

So only a frame builder who is a professional manufacturer, may have the tooling to machine the head tube,
to suit one or the others..

You may write to them and ask personally, If the answer is that important to you.

contact the Importers of Campagnolo, etc. to your country and ask them .

AFAIK there is designed-in Incompatibility .. Toyota water pumps dont fit Fiat engines either..

Oh yes because I obviously am intentionally making things difficult because that is so desirable.

I am relatively new to headsets that aren't external cup. I've installed/replaced integrated headsets before, but am not so sure about this one. Sure I have measured out the inner diameter, etc. but have come here for the chance of extra help. Some people actually do like to help who have the knowledge whether they are in the industry or just a plain-old consumer, feetzbob.

I don't want to machine out the head tube, I'm just hoping someone can help me identify the parts and perhaps find substitutes. While I appreciate the quality of the current headset, the cost of another Campy headset can be off-putting when there might be another one that works and is in my price range. I'm doing what I can with the kind help of jimc101 and the link that they posted.

So, feetzbob, thank you for your time in responding to my question. "You may" move on to a different thread, if this is that unimportant to you.

edit: the reason I want to get a short top cap is a matter of fit. trying to lower my handlebars/stem.

Thanks for the link, but it doesn't supply much about integrated headsets.

you seem to want to help, but you just don't read into what I'm asking.

You're on your own then .. Have a bike shop to walk into with your bike?

Maybe that tapered top spacer thing that tapers can be replaced with a flat washer ?
