Simplex 5500 RD part ideas?
3 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys:
I have broken a piece on my Simplex rear derailleur as part of a PX10 restoration. I think that it is a 5500, but might be SLJ 5000. It is not marked on the RD, but there is no plastic anywhere. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=498594http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=498595 I have also attached diagram for SLJ 5000 where the parts are listed as Part no 3856L/3909 for the cable connection housing and for the little clamp? that keeps the pin positioned. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=498596 Because I am not certain about the RD, I looked up some other RD, (alternately on 5500 and 4134L/3909; 3616/3618 on AR615). This piece serves two roles: Cable connection and parallelogram hinge pin, near the x in the nameplate of Simplex. The piece sheared off while leaving the pin in the parallelogram still works, both the cable assembly and clamp on the far side of the pin are gone. Hence the two part numbers. Question: 1) Where does one get parts like this? Ebay turned up no results for any of the part number possibilities listed above. I live in Seattle and check Recycled Cycles (I actually found the RD in their bins) and Wright Bros and am coming up empty. 2) Am I looking at a situation where I have to get two SLJ’s to keep one working? This part is problematical as this area is riveted in earlier and lower end models, meaning I cannot get a plastic RD and mine it for these parts. 3) Advice? Thanks in Advance |
Thanks for the reply.
I agree about the working replacement while trying to repair this one. I already have one in the works. I might even use one of my Criterium in the mean time. I am developing a little bit of a bin myself of Prestige shifters, derailleurs (both front and back) Also a few SLJ FD (braised not clamped) I also have a bit of a Ideale collection (80, 90R, 42) in addition to a Middlemores I will look at the profile to see if there is a way to put things there to promote barter..... |
A hobbiest lathe and milling machine are most useful for making small parts.....

Perhaps a machine shop or tool making shop can give you a piece of suitable metal?
cheers |

cheers I have purchased an interim solution, but a Simplex SLT 5500 needs to live on. This gives me time to find a solution. There should be enough machine shops type places in the Seattle area that could build a solution. |
I am just working on having multiple bikes. My wife and I are on a minimizing kick so having a place with some nice highend tools is not in my future.
If I keep less tools, I can keep more bikes.... LOL. |
