full chainguard problem
 

i searched around the net but i couldn't find advice anywhere, so here goes

i'm sure there's somebody here who could help us out to remove this chainguard

i picked up this bike today, the owner said it was bought new...frera... in italy about 10 years ago... then brought it over here in oz


i need to remove the chainguard to get to the BB, she's loose, plus.. it makes a racket [see dent on the bottom]

the rear part could be un-screwed, there appears to be no attachments anywhere else, like it just sits there floating

& it looks like it's in two pieces, hope it ain't pressed on

Have you tried removing the crank arm first?

thought about it, but.. i wasn't sure what it would acheive. there isn;t a chain link so maybe i'll remove the crank and drop the chain?!

but the chainring will still be stuck in there, lol

well, the crank is lose but it won't come off, the inside of the chainguard is behind the BB nut

the most ridiculous set-up ive ever seen!

It also looks to me like it's a pressed together and/or spot welded assembly and wasn't expected to ever be removed. Unless you are very intent on keeping this bike original, I think it's time for destructive removal.

had the same thoughts of bringing the tin snips out

it's something i'm going to flip anyway .... {i got the bike for free** there's another better design chainguard i could use from a scrap 26" bike

Gee, I was hoping for a cool video about chainguard removal. Anyway, many guards are held on by the BB nut - yours is one of 'em.

I doubt that a manufacturer would have made a guard that prevents crankset removal, chain replacement, BB replacement, etc. It appears to have a seam or joint running around its outer edge. If there are no bolts, the inner and outer halves probably just snap together. You should be able to gently pry them apart. If they are stuck, apply penetrating oil around the seam. Then, remove the crank and chainring. With the chainring and outer guard off, you can unfasten the BB nut.

nah, the two halves don't snap apart..they're seam welded together... for good!

what i did discover... after destroying it with an angle grinder...a disk in front of the chainguard.. the size of the crank clicks out :tanti:
