Centerlock hub / 6 bolt compatibility issues
 

Hi all,
I have a centerlock hub I'm trying to use to replace my 6-bolt wheel, 6-bolt Avid rotor with BB5 brakes. I thought it would be easy, I purchased an adapter (admittedly one of the cheapest I could find) only to find it's such an incredibly flimsy design when it could be so simple. It seems the only resistance to the braking force on the rotor is about 1 mm of headless screws sitting proud of the adapter, on which the rotor sits, and it doesn't seem like it would take much for the screws to work loose. I don't trust this at all, and the shimano adapter, well why of course you cannot even tighten it with the normal shimano lockring tool, you have to purchase another tool. No thanks.

Now thinking it's safer to buy a centerlock rotor, but the non-expensive ones are all shimano and old forum posts mention these are not compatible with Avid brakes. Does this still hold true with more recent designs, or can anyone recommend a centerlock rotor below £20 that is compatible with BB5 brakes?

So you have a center lock wheel and hub. Get a center lock rotor and install. Adjust BB5 for clearance. Should work fine, they are all stainless steel. The rotor designs don't really matter, more of some cooling effects and water displacement.

All centerlock/6-bolt adapters I've seen ALSO require the use of the splined lockring to keep the rotor in place.

I think you're simply not assembling it right.

The order is:
adapter on hub
rotor on adapter
lockring thru rotor to engage in hub and torque the rotor down.

Are you using the same diameter rotor?

I have a Problem Solvers the pinch bolt version adapter grips the splines
on the hub a bit . then you put the lock ring* on. [for shimano spline of lockring same as tool for hub]

*One came with the hub, right?

I use a centerlock mag hub on front of my touring bike with a 6 bolt rotor.Uses the simple adapter with 6 pins.No problems at all with it.Been in use for 40,000 miles,up and down mountains all over the western US for the last 5 years.

Installed adapter first with pins sticking out,rotor,then threaded center mount holding the whole mess together.Works fine,no issues at all.
