BB30 noob question

I just bought a 2011 Jamis Xenith for my wife. It has the factory FSA Vero that weighs a ton. I would like to get something lighter and was thinking about 105 or Ultegra but I am getting confused by all the BB compatibility issues. How would I do this or is the a nice, light, triple crank that would be easier?

There are a few good ways. The best, and shimano recommended, is this:
CONVERSION BB | Praxis Cycles
or
BB30 Outboard ABEC-3 BB for 24mm Cranks (Shimano) - Black

It threads into itself, so it is not as prone to creaking as a press fit solution. It also properly loads the crank spindle.

Second best as far as principle, press fit and can be prone to creaking... But awesome low resistance bearings:
BB30.24 by Hawk Racing

These are much cheaper, and utilize the bearings you already have in the bottom bracket. I was informed by the shimano rep that the spindle gets loaded up more towards the center, where it is butted thinner when these are used. He says they have seen spindle failures as a result. I have not seen anything like that personally, and many bikes come from the factory with something like these.
BB/PF30 Universal Adapter for 24mm Spindle Cranks (Shimano, FSA, etc.)

Shimano cranks are great and hard to beat at the prices they go for online... Hope this helps

You can still find an FSA Energy BB30 triple, I know there's some on ebay. Otherwise I would get BB30 outboard bearing conversion with an Ultegra crank.

If weight is your issue, then just remember that BB30 cranks are lighter than Shimano cranks typically, especially if you add in the weight of the BB30 -> BSA adapter. Your issue is of course going to be finding a BB30 triple that is light.

I am confused. The FSA Vero is a square taper crank. Are you sure that your bike has a BB30 bottom bracket?

I looked at the 2011 Jamis catalog ( https://www.jamisbikes.com/catalog_ar...IS_CATALOG.pdf ) The Xenith is a series of pretty high-line carbon frame road bikes with the top line model running SRAM Red and the bottom running an FSA Gossamer crank and all models are spec'ed with BB30 bottom brackets. The Vero cranks isn't mentioned anywhere.

That is why I am confused about the mention of the FSA Vero crank. I looked at the catalogue as well

It has a huge sticker on the bottom that says BB30

Jamis Xenith Endura 1.3 Femme Bike 2011 > Bikes > Road Bikes | Jenson USA

I am thinking about just getting an 11 speed compact and just swapping the whole group. I love my 11 speed and I think that will make it easier for her.

If it really has a BB30 bottom bracket, some kind of adapter would have been used in order to install a square taper crank.
Your wheels may not accept an 11 speed cassette. Check that before buying an 11 speed group

Yeah, I didn't scroll down far enough in the Jamis catalog. The Endura 1.X does indeed have a Vero crank and, apparently a square taper cartridge bottom bracket. If so, there have to be adapters pressed into the BB30 shell. It's also a 9-speed so, as you noted, the freehub body may not take an 11-speed cassette. This could be an expensive upgrade.

In 2011, only Mavic made wheels that could be used for 11 speed without modification

OK, but why did you question the fit of 11-speed in your posting above mine?

Oh yes, I'm looking at wheels too. I had to buy wheels for mine to accomodate the 11 speed.
