Crankset -BB help required
This is my first post so please be gentle .
I have just purchased a frame for around town and just fun riding . I will be running it single speed and need to get a Crankset and Bottom Bracket . The BB is 68mm English and I would like an axle length of 110mm - 113mm to get good chain alignment . I would really like to use BMX type cranks if possible ( 170mm cranks - 44 tooth sprocket ). I'm new to all this and the more I try to research , the more confused I've become . Could someone recommend me a BMX type Crankset - BB combination that will fit my 68mm English bottom bracket ? I will be buying online and don't want to make a mistake and order something that doesn't fit . Help :) Ken |
Generally the BB is considered after the crankset. Also the reference to a BMX type crankset might be misleading to some who view the world through big wheeled eyes. Andy.

Second Andy's remark about the BMX term. That makes me picture a one piece crank! I suspect something like Origin-8 Singlespeed/Fixed Gear Crank Set w/ 46T Ring. Black - Harris Cyclery bicycle shop - West Newton, Massachusetts
would be apropos. That is the crank I used on the 3 piece conversion of my old Columbia Sports 3, and it has served well for several thousand miles. Bottom bracket is an inexpensive UN55, IIRC. I think it was very narrow, maybe 113 mm, to get a good chain line. I realize you specced a 44 tooth chain ring, the crank I linked to is 46 tooth, I did wind up putting on a smaller ring. Don't remember if it was 44, though. Anyway, the crankset will determine the width of the bottom bracket needed. |
