BB compatibility with 5700 crankset

I'm replacing my cranks on a 1988 Trek. I'm installing Shimano 5700 Crankset and need to know if the Shimano BB-R60 Ultegra 6800/105 5800 Hollowtech ii will be compatible with my cranks. I went to my LBS and they had an external bottom bracket that the cup was smaller than what I have on there now, which is a GPX BB. It also came with a cup wrench adapter. This doesn't work for me because of the size of my BB. Thanks for your help.

The 5800/6800 cups should work. SRAM cranks use a different spindle design than shimano so you cant mix and match cranks and BBs. Shimano spindles are same on 10 and 11 speed cranks.

The BB-R60 bottom brackets do use a smaller exterior cup diameter than other Shimano Hollowtech II bottom brackets and the adapter needed to use the older removal/installation tools is included with it. You will need a Shimano bb to work with your 5700 crank and the BB-60R will do fine.

I'm running a CX-50 crankset in a BBR60 BB. It works just fine. The CX50 is essentially a 5700 crankset with 46/36 rings for cyclocross. As HillRider says the adapter to make it work with a standard wrench is included with the BB. I like the BBR60 because the smaller diameter of the cups matches better the diameter of a steel bottom bracket.

The adapter ring that comes with the BBR60 is necessary to install the BBR60 with a tool designed for older Shimano bottom brackets (which used the same tool as nearly every other brand's external cup BB). Not all tools work with the adapter.
