Broken spokes

Hi, I own a Trek 7.2FX. I've had it since basically August of last year (2015). My riding environment has consisted solely of county roads and city streets. I have literally never had this bike off of paved or concrete roads. Last year I had two spokes break. This year, less than 100 miles into the new season, two more broken spokes. I'm so freaking frustrated and just wanted to know what advice I could get. I've submitted for warranty replacement. After that what should I do? Replace with a heavier duty rear wheel...replace the bike? I am approximately 6 feet tall and weigh around 245-250 lbs. I wonder if another style of bike would be better as well....a DS bike maybe? Help please I'm trying to make the best decision here.

If it was my bike I'd have my wheel rebuilt with all new spokes. There's no need to go overboard with the hardware because the trick is in the build quality. In a nutshell, a bicycle wheel needs adequate and equal spoke tensions.

It's either a poor build or a bad batch of spokes.
They should warranty that.
I'm about your weight and I built 32 spoke wheels for my hybrid.

Stock wheels suck for Clydes. You need a better rear wheel. Either get one built or buy a nice one online. I've had luck with wheelsets from Velomine. I'm heavier than you FYI.

A well built, conventional wheel will be fine. You could take your wheels to a wheelbuilder/bike shop and have them rebuild with new spokes.

But don't drop off curbs, etc. That's tough on wheels, even for non Clydes.

Your problem is likely poorly tuned wheels during the bicycle preparation at the shop you bought it from. Bikes come with machine laced and tensioned wheels that need some tuning before the bike is sold to the customer but, in my experience, this is a step that is seldom done because it takes time and/or is easily overlooked. The wheel should probably be warrantied but I doubt it will go much of anywhere and the wheel you get as a replacement isn't going to be all that much better than what you already have.

I would suggest that you get a new, stronger wheel but what most people think of as "stronger" is just heavier. Nearly everyone thinks a "strong" wheel is one with a heavy rim without understanding that the rim has very little to do with wheel strength nor does it have much to do with reducing spoke breakage. For your weight and size, you need to investigate using a stronger spoke which is the real strength member in a wheel. I suggest triple butted spokes which are spokes with a head that is around 2.3mm in diameter rather than 2.0 mm in diameter. Wheel Fanatyk...run by the guy who founded Wheel Smith spokes...has a really good article on why you should use triple butted spokes. His arguments fall pretty much in line with what I have experienced in using them exclusively for the last 15 years.

Unfortunately, I've also found the same resistance to these spokes that he notes from other wheel builders. I'm sure that I'll get flamed here as well.
