Clicking Noise

I am new to biking. Trying to stop a clicking noise from the rear of an older MTB. I changed to friction shifters to trim the noise away. It only happens in 1 and 2 gears. The bike is a 12 speed in total. I am about ready to order a new derailleur because no matter how I adjust or trim the noise will not go away. It is a short cage and I can buy one for under $10. Any advice?

Have you put a derailer hanger adjustment tool on your derailer hanger? If you disconnect the cable (or loosen the cable tension) on your rear derailer, does the ticking go away on the smallest cog?

The problem could be in your derailer, maybe just a jockey wheel. Could also be your chain and/or cassette.

Thank you for the advice. I will will disconnect the cable which should allow a full change to the smallest cog. If the noise goes away I guess it is an adjustment problem. When off the ground the binding looks like it is coming from the higher jockey wheel.

With a friction shiftier installed I wonder if I could put a long cage derailleur?

The joys of turning wrenches!
