Campy Centaur shifter going too far forward

I've got a Campy Centaur right/rear brifter where the shift lever overextends and hits/rests against the brake lever. Even if i push the quick-release to allow the brake lever to overextend, the shifter still rests against the brake lever.
But try as I might, I can't see anything damaged.
Any hints and/or suggestions for a fix?
(It works, but the shifter snags a bit on actuation)

Aluminum levers ?
Not sure exactly what you're describing, but I have a 2009 Centaur aluminum shifter, and the shift lever was not quite lined up properly with the brake lever, and did not rest on the little rubber bumper, but a bit to the outside. This caused it to snag a bit when shifting to an easier gear.
It also "clacked" on rough road as the shift lever rattled against the brake lever.

After a bit, I got out some big pliers and gave the lever a bit of a bend ... fixed.

Yes, aluminium levers.
Sounds sorta similar. Difference being - as I described above - that if I release the brake lever forward, the shifter will continue to follow.
Don't want to start bending as it seems like a real uncertain fix.
Can something happen to the return spring for the shifter, causing it to act above and beyond what's requested?

I don't see how this can happen with the brake lever release button pushed to widen the brakes for tire changes, and still shift reasonably well. Maybe something else is cracked or broken internally. Does the shift lever show any cracks near it's axle?

Do both upshifts and downshifts work okay?

It's not unusual for the shift lever to rattle against the brake lever when both are in the riding position. But you say it still does with the release button pushed over.

The aluminum shift arm is attached to the steel shift mechanism. There's a steel wedge shaped piece that's next to the arm axle. It stops the arm from moving too far toward the brake lever. It's at the yellow arrow in the photo.

I don't think it's possible to break off that wedge.

My old approx 2010 Veloce levers. This is the left shifter. The right shifter has the same wedge, but it's also on the right side of the shift lever, up inside the shift body, not on the thumb lever side. So it's a little hard to see.

No visible cracks.
Yeah - or at least as well as current cabling and derailers allows.
Yeah, the little rubber pad on the brake lever meant to reduce that keeps getting pushed out of position.

Here are two pics, the left one with the q/r released, the right one in normal riding position.
With q/r released, there should be a clear gap between the levers, but there isn't. The shifter keeps riding up against the brake lever.

Found it.
The square little piece that the shifter is hinged in is supposed to have two protruding corners to stop the lever's forward motion. But on this one, both have sheared off. Difficult to see first, hidden under grease and dust.
So what next?
Can I get that as a spare, or do I need to find a donor/replacement shifter?
