BB spindle length
I had to have my BB replaced. An old Shimano 600 tricolor bracket was replaced with something newer. The shop said "if there are any problems shifting, come back, because the spindle on this BB was a couple mm longer than the old one."
They did have to adjust the front derailleur after I took it for a spin. (I don't quite get why they couldn't have adjusted it prior to giving me the bike back...)
Shouldn't they have been able to replace it with a proper length spindle? And does the change in chainline of this amount cause any problems?

They probably used what they had in stock that would work.
Depending on the crank and your budget, there may have been a "more idea" length and maybe not.
What's the length of the old vs new?

The old bottom bracket may have been of asymmetrical length, and an exact replacement may not have been available.

And yes, the bike is fixed. I never knew what a difference a new BB could make. The old one could barely be spun with bare fingers.

.
...spindle lengths do not come in 1mm increments. There are jumps in what manufacturers make and sell. Look here and click on the size selection link.

Pricy , as its made in California , but Phil Wood BB is very adjustable , in addition to Spindle length choices ..
there is the cartridge location between the 2 Mounting Rings + the tight press fit of the smooth spindle thru the Sealed bearings
allows the axle to be pulled side to side a Bit.

That's the short answer that we all wanted to hear.
If you care, I could give you a much longer answer regarding BB spindle lengths and chain lines but, in the end, "if it works" is the only thing that matters.
