Handlebars adjustment
 

Hello,
I have a specialized crossroads hybrid bike.
I'm trying to adjust the handlebars.
I realize that the screw on top of the stem moves the bars up and down.
My problem is that I want to move the bars closer to me.
I took out the screw that looks like it would be the most likely screw to remove. But after removing, the screw goes into a sleeve that turns but doesn't move.
The handlebars don't move with the screw removed. It seems like the sleeve also needsee to be removed to adjust the bars....please help!!

To move the bars closer to you you'll need a new stem.

If you have the "threadless" stem the top cap screw does not move the bars. If it s quill stem the screw adjusts a wedge at the bottom of the stem which can be used to adjust the stem height, but it is not as simple as turning the screw and the bars move. Edit: Some bikes are equipped with an adjustable stem, where you can change the stem angle.

Un Less this is a quill stem in a 1" threaded headset , The screw on top does Not. move it up and down Its your bearing adjustment

the 2 bolts on the back of the stem lock the bearing adjustment in place .

If a Quill stem you have a Wedge binding the stem inside the fork . removing the bolt does not loosen the wedge

Screw it back in leave it 1/4" up , put a wood block on the end of the bolt and hit it with a Hammer to loosen the wedge .

It was left in too long and rust and corrosion have done their worst,. in combination.



You move the bars closer to you by Replacing the stem with another one ,

The horizontal distance is Reach , you want a stem that is shorter reach.

You can also just buy different pull back bend handlebars, too , Check with your Bike shop

you can hold in your hands a few different bars over the bike and get an Idea about how they'd feel.

Probably an adjustable quill stem. Try the bolt on the side.
