Just not happy
I rebuilt a pedal tonight. A Wellgo platform. My MTB was making click-crink noises and that seemed like the first place to look since I could feel it in my left toes. I looked at the pedal and I could see a few burrs of aluminum... must have started it cross threaded at some point, but I really don't remember. Anyhow only the first turn of thread is spoiled. Pulled the pedal off and it wasn't smooth, a few little hitches. Quite tight. I pulled it apart and couldn't find any FOD. I noted that the inner set of balls had polished the flat black coating off the spindle but I couldn't find a similar line on the outer end of the spindle. I cleaned everything well and greased it a lot and put it back together and adjusted it. Now when I turn it, it no longer has any hitches, but I feel something like a constant scrape going all around the spindle. The pedal has taken a few hits and one of the pins on the outside of the cage is quite bent, but the action doesn't do the loose-tight thing that it might if the internals were bent.
I guess I'm not really looking for advice. I'm just disappointed it didn't turn out perfect. |
Personally I would not bother rebuilding MTB pedals, just buy another set, as you say you have wacked it a few times anyway, only if it's vintage / classic etc, will I strip & Rebuild them, also many MTB pedals are sealed at the NDE (not having cups for access)

What's FOD?
Either be happy that you improved (though not perfected) the pedals, or replace. I am very happy with Wellgo MG-1 and MG-3 pedals I got off fleabay for about $20/pr. |
I've Re greased My Campag Pedals a few times .. want to Pay Me to fix Yours?
FOD ? Friend of the Devil ? |
|
brand new balls ? fresh grease you get the bearing Cone adjustment Goldilocks?
Or this more a 'Princess and the Pea' Story? |
I had a problem with gritty noise coming from a Look delta pedal. When I got it apart I found the noise was not from worn or dirty bearings, but from grit caught in the plastic dust shield.

...I admire your initiative. I pretty much toss Wellgo's when they go. There are a lot of pedals in the world, and the some of the MKS stuff is remarkably affordable. :) these days my pedal rebuilding activities are pretty much confined to Campy and Road Ace. I didn't even know Wellgo made rebuildable stuff any more. :o |
