Press fit bottom bracket BB86

Hey gang, question for you, can I use any crankset that makes use of a standard external bottom bracket with a frame with a BB86 bottom bracket or am I limited here? Also, I've got traditional bottom bracket tools and external bottom bracket tools but nothing for these new creatures, so can I use a typical home made press like what I use for inserting a headset or do I need those Park cups for pressing that in? As always, thanks for your input.

What did you learn from doing your own research first?

i found this.. Complete guide to bottom brackets - BikeRadar USA

Ever seen an Arbor Press ? they are really not that hard to make..

for the kinds of forces needed you probably dont even to use steel Angle Iron or I beams..

Its a frame to resist the pushing down with a simple upside down Hydraulic Jack

mounted to the top of the frame , with Your Project at the bottom.

Yes, you should be able to press a BB86 bb into a frame with a home made press, much like you would with a headset.

As for compatibility, not all BB86 bb's are the same, like other bottom bracket standards, BB86 requires that you match the bottom bracket to the crankset you want to use. Example, there are GXP-compatible BB86 bb's for use with GXP cranksets, Shimano BB86 bb's for use with Shimano Hollowtech II cranksets, etc.

A homemade press should work. What crankset do you want to use on the BB86 frame?

well it seems from my "research" that I might be able to use any Shimano crankset designed for an external bottom bracket that has a 24mm spindle so I have a few options

This is an excellent BB for a Shimano crank on a BB86 frame:

at $120 for a bottom bracket when you can get a Dura Ace for less than $30, I would hope it would be damn good.

I've used Shimano BB92 (mtb version of BB86) for thousands of off-road miles in the worst conditions, you should get excellent service out of any of the compatible Shimano bb's for your BB86 frame, that's what I'd recommend. And as you mention, even the Dura Ace version for BB86 is quite inexpensive.

You can technically fit a long axle 30mm crank in a BB86 frame, but it requires an expensive and probably not very durable bottom bracket. The special BBs creak less, for people that have creaking problems with press fit. You can just use a headset style press, no arbor press needed. Just make sure not to ally pressure on the inner race.

I recently switched the crankset on my road bike that has a bb86. It originally came with a Gxp clone crankset and I swapped it to shimano 105, using a Wheels Manufacturing BB. I read people prefer these to the shimano BBs because shimano casing tends to be creaky.

Lot of BB86 compatible options on their site.

Thanks, didn't see all those options when last on their site. I didn't realize that there was an option to use a threaded external bottom bracket in a frame designed for press fit bb's. Has anyone used one of their threaded bb's for BB86 or a BB30 based frame?

Much better bearings. A lot smoother.
