What is this tool?

This came in a bike tool set, but not sure what it is as I've never used it.

The knuckle busting is a rite-of-passage.

FYI, if your chainring bolts need that to tighten them, you should be investing in new, not-crudded-up chainring bolts. To break them loose, you obviously need something, unless you're using an impact gun.

It's a spoke driver. Used for starting spokes into the nipples when spoking a wheel.

I was going to say that too but it looks to wide for spokes. The blade on a spoke driver is very narrow

You mean a nipple driver? Used for starting nipples onto spokes?

Yep.
A tool for holding a chainring nut would have two prongs in the shape of a U.

Yeah, don't think so. A nipple driver should just have a pin to locate the tool on the nipple.

Pin, tab, both perform the same function of ejecting the driver once the spoke reaches a certain depth.

I made a spoke/nipple drive from a free Harbor Freight screwdriver (one of a set of five), and it looks just like the tool in the photo (which does not look large enough to fit on a chainring bolt). An object in the photo with the tool to judge size might have made a difference.

Now I guess I'll have to use another one of the screwdrivers from that set to make a bigger version to tighten chainring bolts.
