Issues with used 10sp Campy goupset?

I am entering a market I don't know well. (I do have solid experience with vintage bikes and components. )I have a chance to buy a Campy Record groupset, 10 speed.
I have never owned modern, carbon components like these. I look at the groupset tomorrow. What should I take careful attention in inspecting? The set includes the following: Ultra torque cranks, brake calipers, ultra shifters, chain/cassette. Of course, I will inspect careful, but I was just wonder is there anything I should watch for with a used set like this? Thanks.

Not sure if these are solid carbon or carbon-wrapped. If the latter, surface blemishes don't strongly affect teh integrity of the parts.

Crank surfaces should not have a lot of scratching, certainly not real deep scratches.

I have a 2005 set of Record levers in use, and they are fantastic regardless of age.

Do you get derailleurs? You should be able to use anything that is Campy and marked for 10-speed.

Usual issues: Italian v. BSA in the BB, calipers nutted versus recessed screw, brake reach suitable for your frame ... Ergolever clamps suitable for your handlebar diameter, in case you have odd 'bars.

Headset? Cable set? cassette wear? Chain elongation? Cable adjusters? Ferrules on hand that fit the cable housings?

Installing, these really benefit from properly dressed housing ends.

Any markings on the parts? Some of us can lend insight based on that.

Know the generation or the year?

all up and running and thinking of ranging far afield ..

Just Note: in smaller towns , cycle touring, Riders in need will find repair parts available only by special order.

Out on the Coast, to accommodate, a couple shops in 2 towns have co operated.

Campag users come into one with a problem, phone calls are made, and the other one will have ordered the parts, 2 days ride south .. overnight shipping, to be there when they arrive.

staying close to home, being a collector type, getting this just to ride locally that won't be an Issue..

i have the ultra torque crankset and absolutely love it BUT i ditched the wavy washer and added carefully measured spacers as described by rogue mechanic. many would argue against this, but i've had 15,000 creak free miles.

I would assume that the chain is kaput, and possibly the cassette. Almost every used bike I see needs a new chain, and that the chain became so absurdly worn out that it took out the cassette and then the chainrings as well. Inspect carefully. A genuine, new set of Campy rings is going to cost you in excess of $200.

Look for the wear on the shifter hoods. If the hoods are noticeably worn, then the right shifter G-springs likely need replacing as well. Takes a few thousand miles. Run through the right-hand shifting with a cable installed. If the G-springs carrier is broken, then the carrier will have to be replaced at the same time. About 25% of the second-hand Campy shifters I see, need all of this work. If the hoods and springs and carrier need replacing, then we're looking at $100 in parts in total.

Make sure that the Ultratorque attachment bolt is included. And the wavy washer. And the barrel adjusters for the brakes. All missing in high percentage of component sales. When people strip parts off of bikes, it seems that every part that is not locked down just falls through the cracks..

Inspect the front and rear derailleurs for pivot slop/wear. And for worn-out jockey wheels. If the wheels show major wear, then the derailleur is probably finished as well.

I got about 14,000 miles out of my last set of hoods, and never managed a full 3-years of riding on a set of G-springs.

$40 in parts, $61 in cash to replace plus have a spare set of G-springs and 4 carriers. They're wear items and worth having on hand.

$25 brake hoods

$8 G-springs (4 pack for $16, with 2 of 4 required for each repair)

$4 carrier (5 pack for $20)

Thanks for all the response. I went and looked at this groupset; seller was from Craigslist. Too much heavy wear; I did not purchase. I have bought and sold many components/bikes. On the spectrum I have seen, this groupset was on the heavily used end. The bearings on the BB were past their useful life; the cups were heavily wrenched and beat up. The brake calipers had the black andonized worn off; bike was probably used with large tires or off road (?). The ergo shifters did not "click" right; they stuck and made painful sounds. The photos in the ad were nice, I was surprised by the condition. I appoligized to seller, thanked him and walked.
