Replacement Derailleur Shimano Ultegra RD-6600

My rear derailleur got caught in the spokes and badly bent. I want to replace it and I think I can do the work myself. It is a Shimano Ultegra and it is stamped RD-6600. My bike is a 2009 and it appears that model deraileur is has been replaced. What model derailleur should I buy as a replacement? Also, what is short cage and medium cage?

6600 can be replaced with almost any 10 speed road shimano RD 5600, 5700, 6700 even 7900 take your pick of price and color, just not the 4700, as this has a different cable pull.

For short cage vs med, if you running upto a 28t in the back, short will work, 28t-32t for the med (there is a bit of leeway for this)

For the damage you described, would be checking the hanger to see if this is bent (bend back/replace as necessary)

What jimc101 said. If you install a medium cage derailleur it will allow for future installation of larger cogs, with little to no degradation of shifting performance.

+1 (also RD-4600 I believe). Also a 9 speed Deore or XT.

Or go niche and try Microshift...
