Cantilever brake lever or V-brake lever = How to tell?

I posted about this earlier today but can't find the thread anywhere.

What's an easy way to tell if a brake lever is for cantilever brakes or for V-brakes? I know the distance to the pivot is different but is there a simple measurment I can usde to sort out my friend's brake levers? He fixes bikes and sells them inexpensively to poor people. He'd give them away but then people don't look after the bike.

Thanks and cheers

You can eyeball.
Or look at other bikes.

Cantilever levers pull about 20mm of cable and v-brake levers pull about 40mm of cable.

I've posted about it before, but can't be bothered to track down the numbers right now. As I recall, V-brake levers will measure 35+mm from pivot to cable anchor Point, while canti-caliper will be abt 28 mm.

Bill shows 1 way there are others to let 1 lever be used on either kind of brake .

Trek-Bontrager they have 2 places to fit the cable head nearer or further from the pivot. as you install the Lever.

Avid has the speed dial ..

It's adjustable but it's still a long pull brake lever that's made for v-brakes or mountain mechanical disc brakes.

Speed dials pull about 37 to 42mm of cable.

Here's the situation.

The guy has a box of brake levers for upright handelbars. He wants to be able to tell eaily which ones are V-brake ones and which ones are for cantilever ones. He does NOT want to buy new brake levers let alone dual purpose ones.

Cheers

OK, dug up my old post:
Based on what I had available then, the average distance between brake lever pivot point and brake cable anchor is 28 mm for a canti/caliper compatible brake lever and 35 mm for a v-brake lever.

Attach a cable & some housing to the lever,
with the housing against the lever, pull the brake lever fully so it pulls the cable through the housing,
when this is done put a bit of sticky tape on the cable at the end of the housing to show where the cable comes to in the fully pulled position,
release the brake lever and pull the cable back out of the housing,
measure the distance from the tape on the cable to the end of the housing.
