Campagnolo / Miche cassette width

I am trying to replace a worn out 10sp cCmpagnolo cassette on a bike I'm fixing up.
The old cassette is I think a Veloce cassette and the width is a touch over 38mm. The bike is running a Veloce derailleur and Mirage 10sp shifter. I think it is all early-mid 2000s vintage. It all worked pretty well -except the old cassette is worn out.


I bought a Miche Primate 10sp Campagnolo compatible cassette and this does not fit - only 9 of the 10 sprockets fit on, there are no splines left for the smallest sprocket to engage on the freehub. This cassette measures at 40mm. I can get the lockring to engage, but obviously this won't work as the smallest sprocket will just spin as it is not engaged on any splines. The wheel will fit in the fork, but there seems little tolerance once the chain is on.

The freehub has 38mm of clearance for a cassette to fit.


So, what to do? The obvious answer seems to be to get a genuine campagnolo cassette, but I guess they will be 40mm too, and hence too big? A new cassette AND freehub?


Any thoughts/experiences/answers?
