Tiara 9 speed STI

Picked up s new bike with this old STI

A few questions.

I. All info on the web says no trim, but they do trim.
Ii. Left hand STI is quite heavy/hard to shift. Right is buttery light.
Iii. Bike came with inline adjusters. I've been told to remove them.
Iv. I'm guessing these are the 4500 not 4600 model.

1. Correct. The set I have trims too.
2. Sounds like the cables and/or housings need to be replaced. I'd replace both just so you know that you have new stuff on there and can forget about that part for a while. The previous owner probably didn't shift the front very often so didn't worry about it, or wasn't aware of it.
3. I'd leave the front one at least. The rear derailleur has a barrel adjuster so you don't need one for the rear, but there's no harm having one for it.
4. Correct. 4600 is ten speed.

Re: 2; besides checking the cable condition, make certain that the FD shift wire is correctly routed. If it is not it could shorten the lever arm, making shifting hard and screwing up your indexing.

A common trick to help figure out stiff shifter action is to detatch the cable, pull it out of all the casings and with hand holding it work the shifter through it's range. Is the action still stiff? If so then the shifter needs service/cleaning and lube. If not then the cable path or the ft der's actual pivoting are the problem. Move the der by hand and if it's freely moving then the cable path is your issue. Andy.

It never hurts to flush and lube older STI shifters, here's a good video:

INPD: Thanks for the feedback. So many times we offer suggestions and never hear whether or not they worked out. Glad yours did.
