Does any website sell a bike seat "kit"?
Hi all, today I had the misfortune of my bike seat being stolen while I had it locked up while I was at work. Rough neighborhood.
I need to buy a new one, but I notice that the websites all only seem to sell a single piece of the bike seat. I can buy the seat itself, or the post that it rests on. Buying each of these separately would be an infuriatingly expensive way to replace a very cheap and simple bike seat. Does anyone know where I can buy all of these items together in a sort of value bargain? Surely I'm not the first to have this happen to them, so I imagine there should be a website that offers this kind of service. EDIT: Looks like there's not, and bike seat posts have various sizes (I just assumed they'd be standardized). Thanks for the answers! |
They even took the collar? That is a rough neighborhood.

So I guess I just need the seat and post. Do you know if anyone sells them as a pair? |
Sorry, I don't think so. I guess you know seatposts come in a variety of sizes and you need the exact size. 10th of mm exact.

Thanks a lot for the posts guys. I might actually stick around these boards, y'all seem friendly and helpful enough :) |
I've seen a few bike shops around that have boxes of old/take-off stems and posts, usually selling for $5 or $10. I guessing if you bought a new seat at one of those bike shops they might throw in a old seat post and collar for you.

That would be a good way to make sure you have the correct size. They might have some used saddles as well.

If you have a bike co-op in your city that could be a good source as well.

When you get your new seat and post, take a section of old chain from the co-op, run it from the seat rails through the chainstay/seat tube junction and have someone help you pin it together. Thieves typically do not carry a chain tool with them and chains are pretty hard to cut through. Works even better if you also get an old inner tube from the co-op and put the chain through it before pinning; keeps it from rattling around too much and damaging the paint.
Post what you need in seatpost size here before you buy, lots of us have boxes of them as well as used saddles. If I have one in the right size for you you can have it and a saddle for the cost of postage. I'll toss in a length of used chain, a pin and a tube too. |
+1) the size - post diameter is measured in incremental steps of 0.2 mm..
I suspect it is a not guessable dimension , so online purcase is not possible. can you find a Bike shop? , perhaps one that sold the bike? then there may be information from owner's memory of what diameter that brand and model used.. Telephone? ... |
Cheap ... Kalloy tube seat post. 7/8" at the top, various diameters for the rest,
A saddle clip that goes on the top, which , with 2 nuts clamps the saddle rails, and upon the top of the post.. and whatever saddle you can tolerate sitting on.. |
I've got a couple of seatposts in 26.6mm, free to a good home. Saddles too if the recipient isn't too fussy. Got a pair of calipers last year to measure inside/outside diameters to 0.?mm after being frustrated one too many times by components that don't have their dimensions stamped into them.

When you get your new seat post and saddle, make sure that you replace the quick release seatpost skewer with a bolt. While certainly not even theft resistant, it will prevent theft from people who aren't prepared to steal bike parts such as those who just take front wheels and saddle/seatposts.

Nobody sells a "kit" because saddles and seatposts are different components of a bicycle. Someone wanting to buy either or both has myriad choices of either part. Example: someone needs a specific saddle, but cannot choose between an expensive or cheap seatpost. This is where, if you are budget minded, choice is your friend. You can choose to go cheap on both parts, or not. But someone who wants to go as cheap as possible without any other thought will probably be in the minority, especially given that there are quite a few seatpost diameters. "Kits" would cost more, not less
