Hesitation With Installing Rear Wheel..

I was in the midst of swapping wheel sets today and the front wheel went on no problem but I have had difficulty putting the rear wheel back on. The wheel has been centered and lined up, I shifted it to the smallest cog and it wants to go on but the hub will not go into the drop outs.. Is there something I am missing here?

Both wheelsets are 700c and 32 tires.

Is the width of the new hub the same as the old hub's width, which should be the same as the width between the inside surfaces of the dropouts?

Try the 2nd or 3rd to last cog.. i find the RD doesn't bind up as much with it a bit up from the bottom. I also find it easier to do with it on the floor and not in a stand.

Also make sure you have the QR loosened up.. the new wheel might need more space than the old one.

That's my guess too.

What's the OLD of the new & old hubs?

RD = Rear derailleur
QR = Quick release

No offense, Jake, but sometimes "new" people don't know the abbreviations and are afraid to ask.

You forgot to grab the wheel and pull it into the dropout.

If the over lock-nut distance (OLD) is the same on the hubs, if the new 32mm tires are no larger than the old 32mm tires, you have released the brake cable tension (lever on Shimano, shifter button on Campy, etc.) and have the RD out of the way you must be able to see where it is binding up, where is it too tight?

I was able to get everything lined up even the brakes were okay but the wheel would not go in that extra little space into the dropouts.

Oh...didn't recognize the name. I guess I haven't been around enough!

Anyway, I guess it's a personal thing. I've been riding and wrenching for about forty years, so when I can't decode someone's initials or slang, I'm always embarrassed to ask!

So it's in the dropouts, but not all the way ?
Horizontal or vertical dropouts ?

Did you check the OLD? How old is this frame, perhaps someone jammed a 130 hub (8+ speed?) into a 126 (6 or 7 speed?) frame and now you need to spread the dropouts to stuff a 130 hub in there. That is another issue. Is there plenty of clearance with the seat tube/FD?

More like a 135 into a 130. Short chainstays with little flex, it ain't going in. I could come up with some analogies but it's Sunday...

Check to see if the RD J-wheels are not hitting/binding on the freewheel... if so pull the RD arm back to allow the chain to engage the sprocket and the dropouts.
If not as others have said go back and check the spacing as well as the opening on the quick release.
Good luck

another thing to look at... are you using the same QR skewer? i've run into trouble with the QR nut not clearing the Derailleur before... unscrew the skewer and remove it... THEN try to put the axle into the dropouts... and yes, i'd suspect the hub width too... are you "upgrading" to extra rear gears, or putting an MTB hub into a road frame, by chance?

I've been around over the years. I just have been on and off on here through that time. I ended up taking my bike to my lbs to have them diagnose it and the rear spacing is 138mm so it will be a little challenging to get the rear wheel on.

Both of my wheel sets use 9 speed cassettes and are road hubs.
