Press-fit Road Bike BB in an MTB?

Someone installed one on my mtb. That's what I found when I removed the old one for a repair. What this means is that the spacer didn't reach across to seal around the spindle where it enter though the bearing. It actually had vibrated loose from the one side that held it during assembly so that it was just floating loose on the crank spindle. Besides not sealing as well, does not reaching across also lesson support between the two bearing? Anyway, I did it right with a 92mm wide one.

The Shimano instructions say that if you have a sealed bottom bracket shell you can leave the sleeve off. It's just to protect from crap coming down the seat tube and chain stays.
