Shimano 6401 8-speed Cassette

What can I get away with on this short cage 6401 RD? Could I go up to a 28? I have a 26 now, but need a bit more leverage for the 8-10 degree hills in my area. BTW, it is paired with a 53/39 front chainring set.

Thanks!!

It partially depends on the length the derailleur hanger, but chances are good it will work.

You could also install most mid range 9 speed Shimano derailleur. A Sora GS has a rear sprocket size range 11-32T (Medium Cage). Select the GS: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BHUXDVU...ing=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks. After wading through a ton of searches, I just ran into this:

Hopefully, this is the answer. Getting another RD is really not an option as the bike is all 600 Ultegra and is staying that way for the sake of consistency.

I understand if it's a looks thing. I ran 28s on mine back before I stated riding triples. This might interest you. It will work with what ever shifters you have. Shimano Ultegra RD-6500 Long Cage Rear Derailleur | eBay
