brake grinding

sometimes when i apply my brakes (shorty 6 cantis) for a long period of time they sound like they're grinding but it doesn't happen all the time. almost sounds like disc brakes on a car.
is it just junk on the rims that's making the noise?
it can happen once and then later in the ride not happen again.
could that be because the short braking periods clean the crap off?

id say its just stuff on the rim. take some really fine sand paper and rub it along your rims. that should help.
