Bottom Bracket Creak

I've been working on this new Tarmac Pro UDi2 and I can't get the bottom bracket to stop creaking. I've taken it apart twice and used some Finish-Line anti seize because that's usually the best fix, but it's not working. It's an Enduro BB30 with a threadless shell, Carbon FACT 10r frame, and Specialized Pro Carbon 52/36T crankset. One bearing is completely smooth and the other is just a little gritty, but that really shouldn't matter. Any suggestions? The bike literally has less than 20 miles on it and I want it to be perfect before summer hits.

20 miles and a gritty bearing already? I sure hope the unsaid is that the bearing was used on another bike before the Tarmac came into the picture. Perhaps bearing retaining compound is the next step. But if that's done i'd sure want to start out with new bearings. Andy.

BTW riding a bike in a creak is really bad on bearings:)

Well, I was tightening the crank bolt to the recommended 45Nm and it snapped. Crank arm fell off while test riding and I nearly crashed the bike. Luckily there aren't any scratches to the frame. Getting pretty upset with Specialized because my warranty rep refuses to call me back.

Yeesh. As for the BB,

Threadless BBs like BB30, PF30, BB86, etc are inherently problematic. Creaking noises are way too common.

Fortunately, there's a sensible solution:

There's no way in hell I'm spending more money on this. Specialized is either going to send me replacement parts or give me a refund. I work for a Specialized dealer so they better do something. They were my favorite, but now they're below Schwinn.

Yeah, I would think this should be Specialized's problem with only 20 miles on the bike. Not acceptable.

Make sure you check the chain ring bolts too.

WizardOfBoz 02-25-17 07:26 PM

You may be barking up the wrong tree. Did you take out the chainring bolts, clean them, and reinstall the with grease and proper torque?

My experience is that my chainring (Dura Ace 11sp) was the creak source.

On edit: Didn't see that Ramzilla beat me to it.
