Low & lower double chainring.....Help!!!!

I'm building (rather "converting") a older road bike into a trails
bike the ride local trails. Everything has been easy to figure out
and learn about except..........
How /what to change the 52t front chainring to a lower ratio such
as...... at 46t or a 44t .......something like that to be just a bit higher
than the 39t that I use the most.

With my knee implants I just can't pull 52t anymore. The bike I'm converting
is a NOS Sanwa that has a Sugino crank / chainring & 6 at the back. I'm
ok with the 6 so I don't want to mess with it at all.

All that said ,and remembering that this is a LOW speed trial bike, any thoughts
on the chainring issue********************???

You need to know the bolt circle diameter of your crank. Once you have that information, you can see what size chainrings are available. Sheldon Brown's site gives instructions for measuring BCD.
