Need New body for RM65 hub

Hi guys,
As the title states, I'm looking for a new body for a Shimano FH-RM65 hub.
Pickings are scarce.
But freehub Bodies for RM33 are plentiful.
They seem to have the same external spline where they mount to the hub.
And I'm not concerned by minor changes to seals.
Do you think I can use one?
Or is there yet another version of hub/body mount around to mess things up?

Shimano 8, 9, and 10 speed freehubs are essentially all the same with possibly one exception, that being the dustcap that sits inside the right side of the hub body. The part number for the two bodies FH-RM65 and RM33) are different but they should be interchangable. Worst case is you will need to carefully swap dustcaps (I had to when I replaced a freehub body on an older XT hub). Remove the one from the new hub first to get a feel how to remove it, then remove the dustcap from the old hub carefully so not to bend it. You can install the balls in the drive side before installing the dustcap. Gently push in the dustcap but not all the way against the balls, there is supposed to be a small amount of room.

Well, no. Most FH bodies have an internally splined cavity that engages a protruding nub on the hub.
The RM65 FH body has a protruding splined plate that sits in a recess in the hub.
It looks similar enough to the RM33, but that is not proof of mechanical fit.

That's what I'm hoping for - unless Shimano in their infinite wisdom have engineered two versions of protruding splined plates.

That is a novel design for Shimano. I wonder if it's common to all of their disc brake hubs. Why not call Shimano-USA's California headquarters and ask if the two bodies are compatible?

And so you are correct about the freehub body for the FH-RM65 and 33. They are essentially reversed from what I consider the normal shimano design (just as you describe). I will agree that the protruding splines on the freehub body of the two hubs looks similiar (from what I have seen on pictures on the internet), but as you say it does not guarantee mechanical fit. Think you may just have to get the freehub body for the FH-RM33 and hope it fits the FH-RM65 (particularly since it seems like the one for the RM65 in not available).

Best of luck.

Hi dabac, did you ever find a solution to this?

I'm in the exact same boat, with the same freehub, the Shimano FH-RM65. It went out on me this morning. I'm currently in the process of trying to clean and relubricate it, but incase that doesn't work i'm also looking for the freehub body, which as you say, is hard to come by.

Apparently the part number for the body is Y-3CT 98040, which is supposedly compatible with the RM33, RM30, and RM65, so I will probably buy that if the cleaning does not work, and hope for the best, but before doing so thought I'd try and find out how you solved the problem incase I have overlooked anything.

Thanks!

Hi dabac, did you ever find a solution to this? My RM65 also just gave up on me, and I'm also looking for a replacement body, but havn't had any luck yet.

The RM65 is part # Y3CT98040
33 is Y3OV98050 If that helps.
