SRAM E-Tap - Center cassette gears clatter
 

I installed an E-Tap shifter / derailluer system on my bike a few months ago and I was amazed at how perfectly it worked and how easy it was to set up and install. Each shift was spot-on and noise free (well, the front derailluer made a bit of noise when the chain went to the big ring but that was normal, not an issue).


Now, with several thousand miles on the bike, the shifts on the middle cogs of the cassette are "imprecise" i.e. a lot of clattery noise coming from them. Note that on the lower (bigger) cogs and the higher (smaller) cogs there is no noise.


Noise is pretty much the same in the middle cogs regardless of which chain-ring I'm in.


I'm thinking it might need to have the chain replaced but at 3,000 miles (approx.) it seems a little early for that. Oh, and my Park chain wear checker says the chain is still good. Chain and all components are SRAM.


I've never heard of any "interior" adjustments for a derailluer, only high and low gear stop bolts.

I have just installed etap on mine, but have not yet ridden it. I have heard on other forums that Shimano cassettes run more quietly on SRAM.

Did you get this sorted out? Is the noise coming from shifting, or just pedaling? I find that if I set the height of the FD at their recommended height, when on the big ring and the larger cogs, the chain hits the little square tab of metal in the upper inner corner of the FD cage. This is more of an issue with a large chainring and a cassette with some large climbing cogs. So I have raised the FD up more and more to clear it, but then it's sorta high. But I think that is where your chain rub might be coming from.

Mine is reasonably quite while riding. Shifting had a small amount of noise, reasonable. I installed force 12 axs on my other bike and it is noticeably quieter and smoother.
