SRAM Rival 1 GXP chainset

Hi

I currently ride a cannondale bad boy (700C wheels) as my commuter. It came with a triple chainset and 9 speed rear set up. I never use the range of gears and the bike is now around 2.5 years old and in need of some love.

I was considering changing the chainset to SRAM rival 1x GXP (42T) and then running a nice wide cassette at the rear (11-32 or similar). Just for mechanical simplicity and weight saving. I can drop the LHS shifter.

Can anyone think of issues that I might come up against or just give me some appreciated advice? I will need a new bottom bracket (GXP specific but which exactly?). Will a standard HG50 shimano chain be OK?

I think the existing specs were:: Chain set Shimano Alivio, 48/36/26
Bottom Bracket Shimano BB-ES25, Octalink
This is a link to a similar specced bike as new see: evanscycles.com/cannondale-bad-boy-3-2015-hybrid-bike-EV214060)

with thanks

I think the Rival crank is only intended for a 68 mm bottom bracket. Also the chainline will be narrower so you could have trouble with chainstay clearance.
If your Alivio crank has replaceable chainrings you can just put a single speed 42 chainring and single speed chainring bolts on it.

Kind of an old thread but wondering if you went ahead with Rival 1? I have a Bad Boy and I'm in an identical position. Was the Rival 1 crankset compatible with the stock bottom bracket?

Hi Will

In the end, i stripped off the 3 old chainrings and fitted a 39 tooth Superstar components single ring. It was a much more economical option and achieved the same end result. I thought it was worth a try and has been completely faultless.

Hope that helps.
