Lock rings or washers for ultegra 6500 bb?

I'm building a frankenbike on a free Claud Butler Audax frame. Throwing a beat up 6500 crankset on that I had laying around. Bought it used ages ago with a BB that doesn't feel sluggish. The BB seems to drive too far into the shell. Should I be inserting a washer in between the cup lip and the bb shell? I have some washers that would seem to fit that I found in my parts organizer, but nothing that looks like a lock ring. Thanks.

It never came with or was used with either. Use whatever makes it work with that frame/bottom bracket shell.

Thanks. As long as I'm not missing a lock ring then I know I can try it with and without washers until I get it set up properly.

That should be an Octalink bb, I don't recall that either side can go into the shell past the point it becomes snug. I may be disremembering, though. There were two different widths, for double or triple.

I think The threads are just being un-smooth, as old BB shells often are, and I'm just being a little gun shy about cranking it down.
