New 9 speed 11-36 cassettes from Shimano
This was in the February releases (with Deore M6000) but I overlooked it... The newest Shimano 9-speed MTB groups will have an 11-36 cassette option, at HG400 and HG201 level, to go along with 2-speed fronts. The shifts are the same as 8x11-32 plus one more cog. 36 is the rated capacity of first-generation, 9-speed and 10-speed Shadow derailleurs, the 9-speed versions of which work with SIS shifters. This seemed notable as previously from Shimano there was 11-32, 11-34, 12-36. The latter isn't common and so far as I can find, SRAM never did one. Sunrace makes an 11-36, but reviews seem mixed. 11-36 gives you a wide enough range for a 1x setup for most situations. But there will be at least one awkward shift. The shift spacing on 9x11-34 is very sweet, the smoothest sequence available.
