hmm, would a 52/36 or 53/39 chainring setups ameliorate the lack of "sweet spot" some of you have experienced with compacts?

The only reason I got on the compact crank tangent is because I told the local bike shop guy I was going to put a 53/39 on my new bike. He scoffed and said "Not even the Pros use those!"

Regarding the cassette, I still like the sound of the SRAM 11/28.

If the gearing increase means that you're now cruising the flats in the small ring, yes. In the big ring, you wind up making your "sweet spot" more centered on the poorly-spaced area. Also, if you're still running 11-28, your low-end is now higher.

Maybe you should check out ritzelrechner.de (german cog calculator) :-) I think unless you actually ride in mountains you need to be somewhere around the middle of your cassette when doing your average cruising speed. If you really need a lot of gears a road triple is much better in my opinion, AND you got perfect chainline on the center ring :-)

I don't get that. Isn't 52/39/30 the new triple?

Ultimately it comes down what's out back.

That sounds like something I might like, in an 11spd. But I'd be tempted to run as a 1x11 then.
