Broken axle-wrong replacement
 

I built my Mavic Open Sport rims with vintage Campy record hubs about 5-6 years ago.The rear hub was for 120 spacing but the 2 mm of axle I had on each size sufficed for all these years.(my Pinarello has 126 or so spacing).The axle broke last week and I decided to get a new axle on ebay same 129mm size.I also bought some new bearings.Any way,after rebuilding the hub, there is not sufficient axle length to mount the wheel!!I don't know if the other axle was slightly larger or if my new grease takes up slightly more room I just know I need a 135mm axle and don't know where to find one!Checked e bay and there is none presently,except for one for $40 something!I'm already out about $20 for the last axle!Anyone got one lieing around somewhere or knows somewhere more reasonably priced?Thanks.

You are sure the bearings are the same size? I don't know much about Campy but I know they use odd size bearings in some of their hubs. The change you're seeing came from somewhere.
You will have to shorten this axle but only $16.55. I used one of their front axles and no problems.

If we're talking about the Campy hubs which were available for a few decades up to the mid 1980s (I believe Record is the name but most will refere to them as Nouvo Record) then the axle for a 126mm frame width should be about 135mm long to insure enough axle/drop out overlap. The ball size is the almost standard 1/4" and 9 per side.


Wheels produces at least three 10mm x 26TPI hollow axles, #8, #9, #18. They vary in overall length. They all are longer then your needs are but a hack saw does a fine job of fixing that. They all will likely cost $25 to $40 in your LBS. Consider this the cost of using that spec. Only a few years ago the same axles would have cost about 1/2 as much.


Down here in the States the LBS supplier, Quality Bicycle Products, stocks these axles and any shop that has an account with them can source an axle. Other suppliers likely also stock these axles. Don't know about Canadian shops and suppliers though. Andy

As Andrew notes, all you need is something that is at least long enough, not exact length.

After some research,I orderered 1/4 inch ball joints NOS.Everyone on line said that was standard for campy record rears.Maybe they"re not.I couldn't notice any difference from the old ones but they were pretty messed up.The wheels do spin smoothly with the new bearings.Anyhow thanks for those sources but I ordered another axle from Niagara for$5.99 that seems to be acceptable after I cut it.{Wheel Master Quick Release Axle - RR, 10 X 26 X 135 X 146**I hope that 26 stands for TPI cause I already ordered it.

Unless the ad writer doesn't understand bike dimensional specs and nomenclature I'd say that 26 is meant of 26TPI. One of the issues with Campy is their lack on assigning model numbers for so long (even today there's a lot of confusion to which version of, say, Chorus one might have). This is why we old guys really want visual conformation of the OP's actual stuff.


let me repeat this. Without a photo to confirm the actual part we are helpless to really know what a poster is talking about. Sure we can answer with a lot of maybe this or maybe that's but at some point we ask ourselves why bother taking so much effort when the OP isn't helping their cause.


So Record has been used on a range of different hubs that have different cone/ball specs over a number of decades. I hope the OP has his stuff finally figured out. Andy.
