Front 2nd gear issue

Got a used GT agressor sport for a spare bike and. Every thing was out of wack and I finally got it just about sorted out but one issue.

I have tried adjusting the front derailleur as much as possible but the best I can get it there is still a problem. When I up shift from 1st to 2nd the derailleur moves but the chain won't catch and it stays in 1st. it does shift up to 3rd properly and when I shift down from 3rd to 2nd it catches just fine as well as going from 2nd to 1st.
My only issue is that 1st to 2nd up shift.

Its a basic 3x7 shimano tourney set up and any advice will be appreciated.

Make sure your derailleur cage is not bent.

Are these "removable" chainrings? Look carefully at the middle chainring that is giving you problems. Does it have shift ramps and pins? Are the teeth taller and more square than normal?

It is possible someone put a 2x chainring as a middle chainring or worse, some kind of a drop-stop ring.

I had one bike that had problems shifting from the middle to the outer ring. Watching it shift, I saw that the angles on the back side of the derailleur cage were holding the chain down. I ended up raising the the derailleur somewhat so shifting didn't catch it on an angle, which fixed the shifting.

There is no single cause for almost any mechanical problem. It's best to get in-person assistance for this as there are multiple possibilities, and there could be more than one problem. Some options - derailleur bent, cage worn or pivots worn, height or angle incorrect, side wear on chain, incorrect shifting technique, wrong, backward mounted or worn chainring.

It was the front derailleur, I swapped it out for a spare off a parts bike and it shifts much better. going to invest in a better one but want to thank all for the replies.

the low limit screw was too far out, and then, with a bit of cable slop, the 1/2 shift will not happen....

Hi!
I have a brand new Giant Escape 3 with the same groupset and the SAME problem.1st to 2nd upshift doesn't stick and sometimes i shift from the 1st to the 3rd as i try harder to ensure i shift to the 2nd.
How were you able to fix this? I am thinking of returning the bike and either upgrading or getting something else , if this seems to be an inherent issue with this groupset. Your thoughts will be really valuable.

Assuming it was set up right you probably just need to take a bit of slack out of the cable.

If you have the same problem as the OP, then have you tried any of the previous suggestions? The same solution might be the same fix for your same problem.
